At the Pet Stylist Academy (National Skills Training Institute), we are committed to providing a supportive, inclusive, and positive learning environment where every student can thrive. We understand that each learner brings unique goals, challenges, and personal circumstances, and we are here to ensure that you have the academic, personal, and wellbeing support needed to succeed throughout your training journey.

We understand that students come from a wide range of educational backgrounds and may require additional support with language, literacy, numeracy, or digital skills at different stages of their training.
Our LLN Support Commitment
Prior to enrolment, all students complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment to help us identify any areas where additional support may be beneficial. This assessment is not a pass or fail test — it simply helps us understand how to best support you.
Where support needs are identified, we may provide:
• One-on-one learning support sessions
• Additional time to complete assessments
• Modified assessment instructions (without reducing competency requirements)
• Verbal explanations or clarification of written tasks
• Access to structured templates and guided assessment tools
• Referral to external specialist services where required

Wellbeing During Practical Training
Many of NSTI’s qualifications involve practical components in real or simulated animal care environments. Your physical and emotional wellbeing during these experiences is essential.
Working in animal care, pet grooming, veterinary environments and dog training settings can be physically demanding and emotionally challenging. It is important that students understand both the self-care strategies and the external support services available to them.
If you ever feel overwhelmed, unsafe, stressed, or unsure about something in your training or workplace, please reach out.
Self-Care and Safety Tips for Animal Care Environments
Animal care workplaces such as grooming salons, kennels, training facilities and veterinary clinics require high levels of physical stamina, emotional resilience and workplace awareness.
1. Protect Your Physical Health
• Use correct manual handling techniques when lifting dogs or equipment.
• Ask for assistance when handling large or reactive animals.
• Wear appropriate PPE (closed shoes, gloves, hearing protection where required).
• Take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and repetitive strain injuries.
• Stay hydrated and eat regularly during long practical days.
Fatigue increases the risk of workplace incidents and injuries.
2. Prioritise Infection Control
• Wash hands between animals.
• Follow biosecurity and infection control procedures at all times.
• Report any bites, scratches or injuries immediately.
• Keep vaccinations (such as tetanus) up to date where recommended.
Good hygiene protects you, your colleagues and the animals in your care.
3. Maintain Emotional Wellbeing
Working with animals can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also involve:
• Managing anxious or reactive animals
• Dealing with distressed clients
• Witnessing injury or illness
• Managing high workloads
It is important to:
• Talk to your trainer or supervisor if something is affecting you.
• Debrief after challenging situations.
• Set boundaries around workload and expectations.
• Recognise early signs of stress or burnout.
4. Psychological Safety in the Workplace
All students have the right to:
• A safe and respectful learning environment
• Freedom from bullying, harassment or discrimination
• Clear communication and fair treatment
If you experience or witness inappropriate behaviour, report it to:
• Your trainer
• The RTO administration team
• Workplace supervisor (if on placement)
We take all concerns seriously and handle them confidentially.
5. Know Your Limits
It is okay to:
• Ask questions
• Say you are unsure
• Request additional supervision
• Decline unsafe instructions
Working beyond your competency or while exhausted can lead to injury or animal welfare concerns.
Emotional Wellbeing When Working with Animals
Working with animals is incredibly rewarding — but it can also be emotionally demanding. Students in animal care, pet grooming, veterinary nursing and dog training environments may experience emotional stress related to:
• Managing injured, unwell or neglected animals
• Euthanasia and end-of-life situations
• High client expectations
• Workplace pressures and time constraints
• Physical fatigue
• Compassion fatigue or burnout
• Exposure to distressed owners
At Pet Stylist Academy and National Skills Training Institute (RTO 41462), we recognise that emotional wellbeing is an essential part of professional development in the animal care industry.
We encourage students to seek support early and often.
💜 Understanding Compassion Fatigue
Compassion fatigue can occur when individuals regularly care for animals in distress. It may include:
• Emotional exhaustion
• Reduced empathy
• Irritability or withdrawal
• Difficulty sleeping
• Feeling overwhelmed
Seeking support is a sign of professionalism and self-awareness — not weakness.
