Course Overview

If you’ve always dreamed of a career based on working with animals, then this ACM30122 Certificate III in Animal Care Services qualification from the Pet Stylist Academy offers an excellent foundational platform for those seeking to launch their careers in the animal care and pet industry.

The objective of the animal care course is to prepare students for their prospective roles within diverse sectors of the animal care and management industry, including but not limited to pet stores, animal shelters, boarding kennels and catteries, grooming facilities, animal sanctuaries, and veterinary practices.

The curriculum of the animal care services course provides a comprehensive introduction to the animal care industry while emphasizing the importance of carrying out animal care duties in a manner that upholds ethical and humane standards. It encompasses training in key areas such as implementing animal hygiene practices, ensuring proper feeding and hydration of animals, providing elementary first aid, and assisting with general animal health care. In addition, the animal care course is designed to build crucial professional competencies including effective intra-workplace communication, adherence to workplace health and safety protocols, and the promotion of environmentally sustainable practices within the work setting. Completion of this course will ensure students are not only skilled in providing quality animal care, but also well-versed in maintaining a safe, communicative, and sustainable workplace environment.

Work Placement

In order to acquire the necessary practical skills to successfully complete a Certificate III Animal Care Services course, a workplace-based training program (known as a Work Placement) is mandatory. Work placement can be paid employment OR volunteering. Students are required to complete a minimum of 15 full days of work placement.

It is the students responsibility to search and secure a work placement position that meets their location, schedule, and interests. If a student is currently working or volunteering in an animal- related business, they may be able to use their current employment or volunteering position for the workplace training.

The ideal work placement settings are kennels, catteries, day care centres, animal welfare shelters, pet shops (with access to animals), wildlife rehabilitation centers, or zoos. However, please note that access to both dogs and cats is necessary to complete some of the practical assessments. Therefore, if a student chooses a wildlife or zoo-related placement or a placement where you only have access to one species (either cat or dog), they will require an additional placement to complete their assessments.

In the animal and pet sectors, work placements are essential for students to acquire critical skills such as animal handling, animal care, effective communication with clients and customers, as well as teamwork.
